The Convention Pictures Page 3
This here is the long lineup of people waiting to go see the new Sailor moon V movie. This was one of many movies that played in 3 theatres down this hall. All the movies ran at the same time so it wasn't possible to see every single movie that ran but the ones I saw where excellent. Many of the movies here brand new and it was our fortune to see them. Ones I recommend seeing:
Cowboy Bebop:
When I first heard the title, I expected to see some sort of Anime western. It turned out to actually be a Sci-fi comedy. The movie tells the tale of a young bounty hunter and his friend who scour the galaxy to catch criminals with million dollar bounties to thier names. The criminals themselves a far from being mere rednecks as many of them are very dangerous. This high budget Japanese TV series was produced by none other then Yoko Kanno herself. Those who don't know of Yoko might want to check out "Macross Plus", one my favorite anime series next to Akira.
BlackJack:
No sir, this is not a story of a Gambler. Blackjack tells the tale of an unlicensed doctor who charges extremely high fees for his expert talent. His services are called upon quite rudely by a mysterious female client who kidnaps BlackJack's daughter to blackmail him into helping some "Super human" patients. It was a very good story that I think was probably written by a guy who happened to be a doctor himself since there was alot of technical terms being exchanged.
Aside from seeing a bunch of movies, I also went to see some seminars. After seeing the Apollo smile concert, I re-entered the room to see Mari Iijima. This rather is a crappy picture of Mari Iijima, a popular Japanese singer who did mant of the songs in Macross about 10 years ago. No wonder she's so popular, she truely had a very beutiful singing voice and a splendid sense of humor. Go check out her page at http://www.marimusic.com/ .
Doh, I unfortunetly was a bit late arriving to the Sailor moon voice actors seminar so I wasn't able to get any decent shots. On top of that the flash on the camera was only good up to 10 feet so the flash didn't light up the faces of the voice acters too much. The show's producer and the voices of Tuxedo mask, sailor jupuiter, Sailor mars and some other character I didn't recognize sat and answered questions. The actors told tales of the brutal hours they worked to get several seaons of sailor moon out the door and how on cue they had to be when doing the voices. The producer called up his mom and dad to proclaim to them how sucessful he was with his show despite thier beliefs he was going to be a failure.
There is no point in arguing, we all know Tuxedo mask is one of the coolest characters on Sailor moon. Hell, he's coolest Anime character around. No hero could ever match his suave and style. This guy here is of couse none other then the voice actor for Tuxedo Mask. What an honor it must be to be him. He was a really nice guy who's normal voice was very close to the voice he used for the character. I took a picture of him in hopes his coolness would rub off on me.
Last but not least is our "All night Anime" photo. Myself, Ben, and Dave all managed to survive all night without sleeping a wink as we watched some strange animes. While some of the other whimpy people who attended slept, we survived. Heres a few animes I recommend if you can find them since I believe alot of this was bootlegged off Japanese TV(given the fact that there where Japanese commercials every few minutes):
Child's toy (Kodomo no Omocha):
Screw South park. If there is any show that truely shocked me its probably this one. The anime follows the adventures of a small 16 year old girl who has her own television show. On top of that, she also attends a local school where she confronts a young boy who takes pleasure out of tormenting his teacher who's easily suseptible to nervous break downs. She has the luxury of having her own "pimp" to drive her to school and to"got to bed with her". One of the young girls finer talents is being able to rant continiously for 2 minutes, as the subtitles stack 3 sentences at a time to try an catch up. This is apparently suppose to be a kids show that would most likely make North American television networks very nervous. While thankfully not pornographic, it is VERY suggestive.
Check out a ton o websites for the show at Anime turnpike: http://anime.jyu.fi/~anipike/series4.html#Kodomo
(title unkown)
Sorry about that. Forgot the damn title. There where a ton of shows that night and my brain wasn't functioning well enough to make mental notes of all of thier titles. So I'll take a shot in the dark with it. The anime I saw told the tale of a young girl who's mother and father decide they want to trade spouses with another family. This, as it turned out, was only part of plan. It turns out that the two families wanted to live together and exist as one family. Ouch, can't help but feel sorry for the young girl who now has a complete stranger as a brother. Only in Anime can you find stories this weird.
